A Healthy Family Plays Games

Thursday, November 29th, 2007

The holidays provide many opportunities to play games with your family. My family has a few card games we play over and over again. We play a modified version of Uno, called Slap Uno mostly. Many people play similar types of games that have different names, but if you are looking for a card game to play with your family, I recommend slap Uno. If you have never played regular Uno, I would check out the directions for that before attempting to play the modified version.

Slap Uno is the same as regular Uno except with one obvious difference, you slap cards. What this means is that if someone plays a blue three, and you have a blue three you can “slap” your blue three on top, and then the next person to play is the person who would normally play after you. The cards have to be exactly the same for you to be able to slap. For instance, if I have a yellow reverse and you have a blue reverse, you cannot slap it. You can slap wilds as well, but we limit it to two draw fours, just to be nice. This makes what is normally a child’s game really fast and exciting. It forces you to pay attention to ever card played, and not simply wait for your turn. Try it out this holiday season.

Sports

Americans love playing sports. We play sports after school, after work and on the weekends. Children play soccer, ride horses, dance, and ride bikes and skateboards. Adults enjoy golf, running, tennis and fishing.

A typical household is filled with different types of sports equipment, sports clothing, and sports snacks and drinks. Many families have soccer, basketball and footballs, snow equipment, beach gear, and camping gear. So how do you store all this equipment?

The best way to store equipment is in lockers in the garage, from the ceiling of the garage, and in large storage closets. It is very important that sports gear stays dry to avoid mold, but also remains separate from any heat sources so it doesn’t catch fire. Storing equipment in large bins, labeled with each individual family member’s name, is a great way to keep it organized and safe.

Many families also choose one time during the year to go through their old gear, take it to used sports sales or garage sales, and purchase new items they need. You can also donate gently used sports gear to children’s programs and secondhand stores.

Also, store sports snacks and drinks in one section of the refrigerator and one section of the pantry. That way, everyone has easy access to the snacks they need to keep them energized and ready to play!

Healthy Learning Styles

Thursday, November 1st, 2007

My favorite classes are ones where the professor or teacher does not simply lecture from a book or PowerPoint slides. I can learn from a book by myself, I do not need any help. When I find a teacher who uses PowerPoint slides exclusively and tests from the book, I do not go to class. I would rather save my money and learn the subject on my own. I had a statistics class that I went to five times in one semester: once to get the syllabus, and four times for the three midterms and final. I would have rather taken the class online, or (if I didn’t have to take the class to graduate) I would have just bought the book and learned on my own.

On the other hand a teacher who is a supplement to the book, filling in holes and better explaining things, can have an impact and effectively help students. But that isn’t enough, a great teacher in my opinion is one that will take what you are supposed to learn in your book and expand on it. A great teacher will apply what you learn in class to the real world and show us how to use what we learn in the real world. They also are available for students after class and will offer to help their students further their knowledge in the subject.
