Are Social Sites Healthy For Website Promotion?

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

Online networking has taken off in recent years. Myspace.com started a revolution in the way we use the Internet, and similar sites like Facebook.com and linkedin.com appeared shortly afterward. These online networking sites have some great benefits. It helps you remember everyone’s names since you can always look him or her up online if you are his or her friend. They also help you stay in touch when you have not seen someone for a while. It is easier than e-mail because it is less formal, but can still serve a purpose.

However, there are some drawbacks to online networking sites. First, you have to constantly be on the lookout for damaging photographs or messages that show up on your profile. Potential employers will look at your Facebook profile or LinkedIn profile, so either keep them clean or do not allow anyone to view it unless they are your friend. Next, these websites are very superficial and someone could easily assume your friend request is superficial and you are just looking for favors. You should not add someone you meet for less than five minutes except in special cases. Online networking can be a great tool if used correctly.
