Professional writing or academic writing can be very confusing and there are some conflicting rules. There are also many different styles like APA, MLA, and even AP. If you are writing a research paper, not many of your friends will be able to edit your paper for anything more than flow or spelling errors. With each style, you cite sources different both in your paper and at the end of it. Overall, writing for educational purposes is something that most people are not familiar with.
There are a few things you can do to make sure your writing is up to standards while you are in college. First, find a professor who is willing to read over your papers and provide you with feedback. The first paper I turned in during college had more red ink on it then actual typing. It was not encouraging, but it helped nonetheless. Also, most colleges require a writing class, and for that class you have to buy a writing book. If there is ever one book in college you should not sell back, it is this one. You will use it every semester.
