Strength Training and Weight Training
Strength training, weight training and resistance training are often used synonymously. Essentially, they all mean the same thing: They offer a great way to stay fit, build muscle and improve body tone.
There are different methods of strength training, all requiring different types of equipment. While weight training uses free weights and weight machines, resistance training requires nothing more than a heavy duty, large rubber band or even another person.
Strength training of any type can be strenuous on joints, ligaments and muscles, so it is important that you begin when you are already relatively fit. Talking to a doctor or a personal trainer can also help you determine if you are ready to start a strength-training program.
Some common strength training techniques include overloading muscles, or making them work harder than they are used to in order to strengthen them, and breathing through resistance, making sure your body is receiving an adequate supply of oxygen as it works hard. Other techniques include making sure to balance your strength-training workout to include a warm-up, stretch, workout and cool down phase.
Exercises included in most strength training workouts are situps, pushups, squats, bench press, bicep curls, leg extensions and leg curls. These can be done with or without weights.
